Red was the color of television’s biggest night. While there weren’t any outright disastrous red carpet looks (okay, Lena Dunham’s was questionable), there was some fantastic standout looks and even some surprises. The problem with wearing red on a red carpet, besides the fact that your couture blends in with a carpet, is that it gets monotonous after the fifth gown. But, some of the best gowns were the ones that didn’t conform. Here were Binge Central’s top five looks of the night:
This was the first red gown I saw last night and it immediately caught my attention. The pattern on this Prabal Gurung dress is subtle but elegant and gives some texture to what could’ve been a very plain dress. The one-ear cuff seems to be a big thing this year, I don’t hate it. Only complaint: the hair. Easy on the sprays and gels, Betty.
Lady Mary took a step away from tradition with this Rosie Assoulin gown. The color combination was perfect for a summer awards show. Dockery is always seen in dark colors on “Downton,” it was nice to see her in a new hue.
Here’s a red gown that worked great. Julia Louis-Dreyfus looked amazing in this custom-made Carolina Herrera. Not only is it elegant and age appropriate, it was nice to see a gown that didn’t require yards of boob tape. To top it all off, LOVE the hair. Where do you get your blowouts Julia? And can I come?
Allison Williams looks like a princess in this Giambattista Valli Couture. Again, another dress that deviated from the “red on the red carpet” look but was a head-turner. Without the band of yellow, this dress wouldn’t be on this list. If she wasn’t already, this dress put Williams on the list of fashion icons from our generation. Bravo Marnie, maybe now you can give your friend Hannah a few fashion tips.
“Orange is the New Black” may have gotten snubbed last night, but Taylor Schilling AKA Piper Chapman won for best red carpet look. She’s had a few slip ups at red carpet events in the past year, but on the night that mattered most, she dazzled in Zuhair Murad.
Other honorable mentions: Sofia Vergara, Sarah Hyland, Kate Mulgrew, Jennifer Westfeldt, Uzo Aduba and Lena Headey.
Rachel’s Unqualified Opinion:
Notice something new and fabulous about our site? We have a new logo! Thanks to Rachel Felson, graphic designer and my best friend since sixth grade. To thank her for getting us one step closer to running a legitimate website, I let her pick the two worst looks of the night. Ready?
Losing fabulously: KERRY WASHINGTON
I know, we’re as shocked as you. How could Kerry get it so wrong? She’s Olivia Pope after all! For starters, the gown is too Halloween for August. Not to mention it looks a little crooked. But, it’s Kerry Washington. So even she comes up short, she does it fabulously.
Giving Rachel nightmares, SARAH PAULSON
Talk about a horror story, right?
