Legend of Korra S4E12+13: “You May Now Do The Thing”

Standard

Of the two series finales I watched this week, there’s really no question about which one provided the more satisfying ending. “The Newsroom” had kind of a blah finale, which I already wrote about in detail. “Legend of Korra,” on the other hand, closed out Book Four on a strong and kind of shocking note. I’ll give “Korra” the series retrospective it deserves some other time, but for now let’s just dive into the satisfying and action-packed two-part finale.

Legend of Korra S4E11: “All Hail the Great Uniter”

Standard

By Josh Axelrod

“Korra” has taken a different path with each of its villains. Amon almost escaped before being killed in Tarloq’s noble murder-suicide (that’s a weird sentence). Unaloq was just power-hungry and needed to be killed in order to stop his reign as the Dark Avatar. Zaheer did the most damage to Korra, yet he was kept alive and even helped Korra reconnect with the spirit world.

Legend of Korra S4E9: “I’m Gonna Poke It With A Stick”

Standard

Korra is back! Or should I say, the old badass Korra has returned. It took nine episodes and more spiritual journeys than it probably should have, but Korra finally seems to be over the mental block that was holding her back from being the avatar. With Kuvira gaining power and harvesting spirit vines to create her ultimate weapon, the world has never needed Korra to be at full strength more.

Legend of Korra S4E1: Balance

Standard

Well, that was a quick turnaround. Book Three of “Legend of Korra” ended slightly over a month ago, and yet we’re already on Book Four. Something screwy is clearly going on behind the scenes at Nickelodeon, but I’m not going to argue with more content from the best cartoon on TV (even if this its last season). And judging by the Book Four premiere, we’re in for another quality season.

Legend of Korra Book Three Finale: “Empty, and Become Wind

Standard

By Josh Axelrod

Cartoons aren’t supposed to be this good. They aren’t supposed to be able to elicit such visceral reactions from adults. And yet, the two-part “Legend of Korra” Book Three finale took me on a rollercoaster of emotions while sporting some of the best action sequences I’ve ever seen, live action or otherwise.

We began with Team Avatar trying to figure out a plan of attack for rescuing the captured airbenders without giving up Korra to Zaheer. They settled on an idea that more or less involved using Korra as bait. Clearly they didn’t plan on Zaheer using platinum shackles (apparently you can’t metalbend out of platinum?), because that made getting her out of such a dangerous situation much more difficult.
