“The Newsroom” Finale and The End of TV’s Most Underappreciated Show

“The Newsroom” officially ended its three-season run on Sunday. It hit just about every series finale note it should have. Mac was pregnant, Don and Sloan were happy, Jim and Maggie were in love, Neal was back in the U.S., and Charlie was recognized as the larger-than-life figure he always was before B.J. Novak…sorry, Lucas Pruitt pushed him over the edge. The show even ended with Will staring into the camera and beginning his newscast with a “Good evening,” just to remind us that ACN’s cameras won’t stop rolling just because HBO’s did.

The Newsroom S3E5: “I’m Scared All The Time”

I never thought “The Newsroom” would be the kind of show to kill off its characters. Well, its major characters at least. There have been brushes with mortality on the show before, but the stakes for the ACN staff are rarely life and death. So when Charlie Skinner collapsed and banged his head on that desk, it came as a total shock. His death wasn’t quite as crushing as Beth’s on “The Walking Dead,” but it was pretty damn close.

The Newsroom S3E4: “Do We Ever Get To Win One?”

That was one emotionally exhausting hour of television. That ending was an emotional one-two punch of adorable and cripplingly sad. I’ve never been more invested in the Will and Mac relationship, and it’s about to be tested more than ever. Let’s just start from the beginning while I mentally recover.

The Newsroom S3E3: “Do You Kiss Your Sources With That Mouth?”

I continue to be weirdly into everything that’s going down on “The Newsroom.” I recognize that it’s not “Mad Men”-level TV, but for some reason everything happening with ACN feels just as grandiose and important as the wheelings and dealings of Sterling Cooper Draper Price. Of course, the stakes have now been raised for Neal and Will McAvoy considerably.

The Newsroom S3E2: “It Would Take A Long Time to Explain”

So much happened in this episode. There was an excessive amount of moral dilemmas going on this week, not to mention some relationship drama.  Oh, and one semi-major character was fired over a tweet. The final season of “The Newsroom” is clearly going for broke, and for the most part it’s made for fascinating TV so far.
